Welcome to Granada English Academy!
Granada English Academy creates a safe space for Nicaraguan youth to learn and practice English skills outside of the public school system. Fluency in English opens the door to higher education and employment opportunities for Nicaraguan youth, and you can help. We operate on Saturday mornings and serve over about 30 students from 6 to 18 years of age each week.
Join our crew
As a member of our online community, you’re helping us cover the operating costs of our space, including rent, utilities, school supplies and more. In addition to helping to financially support our program, full subscribers get:
Updates and photos from the school delivered right to your email inbox
The ability to comment on posts, to share stories our students can use to practice English and learn about world cultures
Stories and recipes to help you learn more about Nicaraguan culture!
We strive to keep costs as low as possible but do need the support of our international community to keep this program alive. Many of our students are experiencing deep poverty, and your subscriptions also help sponsor tuition for approximately 50% of the class.

In exchange, we hope you’ll enjoy receiving updates from our school and learning more about our life here in Nicaragua.
Maybe you’ll even visit us one day! We welcome visitors and ex-pats to spend a morning with us, conversing with students so they can practice their skills.
Granada English Academy was founded and is operated by local teacher Manuel Lacayo, who is passionate about creating a bright future for Nicaraguan children and youth. It is supported by Canadian editor and publisher Miranda Miller, who volunteers at the school when in-country and fundraises for it year-round on a volunteer basis.

To be clear: Substack takes a small fee for managing this website, and we use Stripe for payment processing, which incurs a small fee, as well. These are the only costs associated with your subscription; there are no management or other fees. All proceeds go directly to Granada English Academy’s operating costs and subsidizing tuition for students who may otherwise not be able to afford these educational opportunities.
